"Siktlinjer – Shifting Landscapes"
A multisensory exhibition at Strandverket Konsthall, Marstrand, where visual art, soundscapes, and scent came together to create a rich, immersive exploration of landscapes. Through this collaboration, visual artist Anna Bäckvall, sound artist Samar Jabri (Baqqa Sound), and perfumer Kerstin Strömberg transformed traditional artistic boundaries into a dynamic interplay of sight, sound, and scent.

Sound to visual art and scent

At the heart of the exhibition were soundstories crafted by Samar Jabri. These were not narrated works but immersive auditory journeys, where soundscapes depicted both external and internal worlds. Inspired by Anna Bäckvall's paintings, these stories seamlessly blended the physical with the emotional, inviting the public to interpret their meanings through listening.

One such work, "Runners High," captured the act of running as a multisensory experience. In this piece, the sound of footsteps meeting different terrains—forest paths, the barking of dogs, crashing waves, and the cries of seagulls—was interwoven with melodies and music that represented the runner’s inner world. Natural water sounds, like waves hitting cliffs, evoked both tranquility and dynamism, grounding the experience in a vivid and tangible reality.

KARIM
Piano Composition, 3 minutes 30 seconds

The painting HÖG evoked complex emotions of mystique, introspection, melancholy, hope, tragedy, and a sense of seeking. This painting, with its elements of moving water, mist, towering heights, orange and green meadows, and clouds swirling like an approaching or departing storm, reminds me of my constant search for meaning and peace.

The painting depicts a natural landscape that feels both beautiful and mysterious to me. The movement of the water and the stormy clouds reflect a dynamic force and energy that inspired me to create a piano composition mirroring a process of emotional and spiritual healing.

KARIM narrates melancholy through its melody, evoking a sense of loss and longing. Meanwhile, the hopeful sections hint at light and future possibilities. It is a journey toward self-awareness and understanding, woven through with a balance of fragility and strength, reflecting the soul’s quest for resolution and harmony.

The painting HIGH evoked complex feelings of mystery, introspection, melancholy, hope, tragedy and searching. Between Doors and Windows
Sound Narrative, 4 minutes - At Strandverket konsthall, Marstrand

The painting "Viol" by Anna Bäckvall features a blue background and depicts a woman standing naked by a window, without facial features. This absence allowed me to see myself reflected in her. The painting evokes a sense of solitude, yet her posture conveys to me that she is at peace within it.

The soundscape portrays my own associations: doors closing and windows opening, symbolizing how people come and go, relationships begin and end, failures and opportunities arise.

The auditory landscape captures the way people move in and out of our lives, as well as my own movement in a home where I am alone, or how the memories of those who once inhabited my space echo. Sounds of sleepless nights and the ticking of a clock symbolize life's relentless, rapid pace and its abrupt transitions.

A rainy night where I stand reflecting, with a door closed and a window open.

Living stones & Twigs

At Strandverket Konsthall

Stone Sounds
I used stones placed in a ceramic bowl with a bit of water to create a foundational soundscape. To enhance and vary these sounds, I applied different reverb settings and slowed down the tempo, resulting in a deeper and more resonant effect.

Water Sounds
The water sounds in the design include recordings from Lake Vättern in Jönköping. These sounds have been modulated in various ways to create texture and movement.

Walking on Twigs and Gravel
I recorded the sound of walking on twigs and gravel in Annelund Park in Borås. These natural elements were processed with an equalizer to highlight the most intriguing frequencies. Reverb was added to create a sense of space and depth within the soundscape.

Atmospheric Effect
This ambient piece is not a standalone work but serves as a mood-enhancing element. It is part of a multisensory experience, designed to complement the exhibition rather than exist as an independent composition.

RUNNER'S HIGH
Sound Narrative, 2 minutes 19 seconds

The sound artist has interpreted the painting SIKTLINJER by Anna Bäckvall as an intertwining of multiple environments and places within a shared vacuum. To me, the painting contains elements of water, earth, sky, elevation, and greenery.

Using the sightlines in the painting as inspiration, I created a sound narrative that aims to evoke the feeling of being naturally intoxicated by running. It reflects how the memory of a run becomes cohesive, almost like a kaleidoscopic recollection. A sense of freedom and euphoria emerges when I run, especially when the walls feel like they narrow and close in.

The sound piece mirrors my personal interpretation of the painting’s dynamic and ever-shifting sense of movement through various environments.

HIDDEN CREATIVITY
Sound Narrative, 3 minutes 39 seconds

The outer stillness contrasts with an inner, dynamic world filled with movement and creative energy.

The painting 07.34 B Anna Bäckvall  transports me to an early morning, when the day has just awakened, and the setting calls to one’s inner longing. Much like a small stream surrounded by trees, it is here that inspiration and creativity reside at the heart.

In this peaceful place, where time seems to fly despite the tranquil calm of the surroundings, one encounters a harmonious balance. The outer stillness contrasts with an inner, vibrant world of motion and creative expression.

The Last Embrace

At Strandverket Konsthall

The Last Embrace
Audio Story, 2 minutes and 46 seconds

She knew it was time—time to leave the garden, the house, and everything she once knew. She flew to Denmark, where my uncle, aunt, and cousins live.

When she saw me, she greeted me with the warmest embrace I had ever received. It was the first time we met, and my heart felt like it would burst with joy. Despite her frailty, she hugged me tightly, as if she never wanted to let go. Tears streamed down her face, and I asked, “Why are you crying?”

She answered, “I’m crying salty and sweet tears at the same time.”

I didn’t understand what she meant then, but two days later, I did. That was when she left us—to reunite with the stars in the ink-blue sky. I had one evening with her, and for that memory, I am grateful. I’ve carried that embrace with me for 23 years.

This audio piece features a vinyl record playing a family song, "Ya Teyour El-Tayra" (Flying Birds) by Saadoun Jaber, released in 1986. Saadoun Jaber, born in 1950 in Basra, Iraq, is a renowned Iraqi singer and composer. He has had a profound influence on Arabic music and is celebrated for his deeply emotional and nostalgic songs.

The song reflects longing for home and love for those who are no longer with us. Its dual meaning also symbolizes the departed, who metaphorically soar above us as birds.

Violin: Gazwan Numan.

Artistic process

Turning a Blind eye

For Turning a Blind Eye (Låtsas som att det regnar), I worked on both the sound design and music composition, focusing on creating an emotional and layered auditory experience that enhanced the film’s narrative. My piano compositions were central, blending cinematic melodies and waltz-inspired rhythms to add depth and intimacy. The piano grounded the soundscape, balancing the complexity of other auditory elements with a human and emotional touch.

I also collaborated with Gazwan Numan, a viola player. In the studio, he improvised under my direction and guidance. I recorded these improvisations and then chopped, rearranged, and sound-pitched them to create entirely new layers. I built these into a dynamic sound picture with around 40 overlapping tracks, panned and moving across the audio space to add dimension and movement.

In addition, I worked with Nontokozo Tshabalala’s voice, recording and then chopping her vocals into fragments, reimagining them into new melodies. Her voice became another layer in the composition, weaving seamlessly with the piano and viola.

The music and sound design were crafted as complementary elements to the monologues, dialogue, foley, and natural environmental sounds in the film. While the music has a cinematic quality, it also feels organic, with voices, viola, and piano layered and pitched in unique ways. My aim was to create a cohesive and haunting atmosphere, where all these elements moved and interacted within the soundscape to support the storytelling and emotional depth of the film.

Summer exhibition

at Röda Sten Konsthall 2023

Water was a central theme in the sound design, representing not only a vital resource but also a spiritual and historical element tied to ancestry and resilience. Jabri drew inspiration from sacred rivers worldwide, such as the Tugela River in South Africa, known for its connection to historical battles, as well as the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in Mesopotamia. Through this, she envisioned a utopian future where humanity honors nature and recognizes water as a force that sustains life and preserves ancestral energy.Jabri’s work is defined by her ability to blend natural sounds with symbolic meaning, creating audio experiences that resonate deeply with cultural and environmental themes. In her collaboration with Tshabalala, she crafted a narrative that celebrated community, historical memory, and a shared vision for a harmonious future.

I have had the honor to work with the amazing multidisciplinary artist, poet, vocalist & afrofutorist Nontokozo Tshabala. I designed sound for the audiovisual piece and a performance at Röda Stens summer exhibition.

The collaboration began with Tshabalala’s poetry, which inspired Jabri to create the soundpiece. Her process was rooted in creative experimentation, where she recorded and manipulated everyday sounds like clapping, stomping, and the use of kitchen items such as pots, pans, and spoons. By stretching, chopping, and pitching these recordings, Jabri transformed them into futuristic yet organic sonic textures, symbolizing memories and collective experiences.

PERFORMANCE -2016

RECLAIM OUR BODIES 2016
Location: Stora Torget, Linköping

"Reclaim Our Bodies" is an acrobatics and dance performance that symbolizes taking back ownership of the female body and breaking the sexist and normative image of women’s bodies. Inspired by their own life stories, the duo delivers a 10-minute acrobatic performance with guts and attitude.

The acrobatic lifts represent women raising one another in the fight against the patriarchy.

The music and soundtrack for the performance features a mix of experimental hip hop with samples of feminist inspirational figures.

As part of the performance, the duo wears underwear, symbolizing the human body, along with the colors of the rainbow. Body painter Vilija Vitkutė creates stunning artwork on the duo’s bodies in tribute to the pride flag, a symbol of the LGBTQ+ movement that represents pride, diversity, and respect for humanity.

The colors symbolize the beauty of differences—in people, in thoughts, and in emotions. The circular shapes in the body art represent the infinite motion of the earth.

"Like one big family, growing like one big tree of love and care, which is so beautiful, we're building a new bright future together."

Suffocated Souls is a glimpse into the thoughts, wounds, anger, and distorted self-image that dark-skinned girls and women are forced into due to societal prejudices and constructed beauty standards.

"There is a beauty ideal that dark-skinned women simply cannot live up to.
I am not small and petite, not tall and skinny. My hair is frizzy and curly, not straight, sleek, and 'silky'."
— Farhiya Feysal

Celebrities and models showcased in fashion magazines and beauty advertisements are predominantly white women of a specific age and body type. Women with darker skin tones who are chosen to represent "beauty" often have lighter skin and slender figures. Media portrayals of women of color are frequently "whitewashed."

There are constructed standards of how a woman must look to be considered beautiful and attractive, and women are judged on how well they meet this standard. The societal pressure on women and the struggle to conform to a certain definition of "beauty" can have psychological effects, such as depression, eating disorders, and low self-esteem, spanning from youth to adulthood.

In this way, beauty circulates as a form of capital and a commodity with social, economic, and cultural value.

This is a call to action for all women!
Make space for women in diverse bodies to share their struggles!

Reflected Disobedience (Reflekterad olydnad)

Reflected Disobedience is a powerful spoken word monologue performed by Farhiya Feysal, directed by America Vera-Zavala, and produced by Östgötateatern in collaboration with Rosa Betong. This evocative performance delves into themes of roots, identity, society, and self-image, reflecting the personal and collective struggles of women navigating societal expectations and cultural heritage.

About Rosa Betong

Rosa Betong was founded by Samar Jabri, who leads all its artistic initiatives. The movement amplifies the voices of marginalized artists and focuses on intersectional feminism, multicultural narratives, and the power of storytelling to challenge societal norms. Through Rosa Betong, Samar Jabri has consistently championed the fight for diversity and representation in the arts.

Each performance invited audiences to engage with urgent themes of race, gender, and representation, using spoken word, music, and storytelling to inspire reflection and dialogue.

Samar Jabri’s Role in Reflected Disobedience

As the sound designer and music creator, Samar Jabri crafted a powerful auditory backdrop for Reflected Disobedience, blending experimental soundscapes and feminist inspiration to enhance the narrative and emotional depth of the performance.
